1944 National League

The War was at its hottest point, but the Cardinals maintained the status quo with another pennant on 105 wins. The Cards ran away with the flag, a status that would change when Stan Musial went into the military the next year. Pittsburgh was 2nd and Cincinnati 3rd. Below .500 were Chicago, New York, Brooklyn, Boston, and Philadelphia. That made for an all-St. Louis World Series, which the Cardinals won. The press for players was becoming so great a 15-year old made his major league debut, still the youngest big league player ever: Joe Nuxhall.

Dixie Walker won the batting title at .357, followed by Stan Musial at .347. Musial led in on-base, slugging, and OPS. He also led with 51 doubles. Bill Nicholson led with 116 runs, 33 homers, and 122 RBI. Musial and Phil Cavarretta tied with 197 hits. Johnny Barrett had 19 triples and 28 steals to lead the league.

Bucky Walters led the league with 23 wins, Joe Heusser with a 2.38 ERA (edging Walters' 2.40), and Bill Voiselle led with 161 strikeouts. Ace Adams had 13 saves.

Top player: Stan Musial. It wasn't really close, but it was a strange year in the MVP voting with Musial finishing 4th in spite of batting .347 and leading the league in OPS for the pennant winners. Perhaps it was because Musial had won the year before and dropped ten points in batting average. Still, the voting was very odd and wildly split. Shortstop Marty Marion is one of the oddest awards choices ever. Even Babe Dahlgren got a first-place vote!

#1 Stan Musial, #2 Bill Nicholson HR and RBI leader, #3 Dixie Walker the batting champ, #4 Augie Galan, #5 Johnny Hopp.

Top pitcher: Veteran Bucky Walters had a last hurrah leading the league with 23 wins and finishing a close second in ERA.

#1 Bucky Walters, #2 Mort Cooper, #3 Bill Voiselle, #4 Max Lanier, #5 Rip Sewell.

Top rookie: Bill Voiselle, although there is some doubt about his rookie status. He led the league in strikeouts.

Top manager: Billy Southworth led the Cardinals to the pennant again.
